"A city break in Frankfurt?" you might ask. "In the summer, when everyone's dreaming of beaches and sunshine?"

Trust me, I get it. We've all been there—that feeling of wanderlust with no clear destination in mind. You crave an escape, but inspiration seems elusive. That's precisely where I found myself, scrolling endlessly through travel photos, until a friend's suggestion sparked my curiosity: Frankfurt.

It wasn't the exotic getaway I'd usually envision, but something about its understated charm called to me. And let me tell you, this often-overlooked city surprised me in the best way possible. While it might not be the obvious choice for a summer city break, Frankfurt offers a unique blend of history, culture, and modern allure that's sure to captivate even the most discerning traveler.

Frankfurt: Where Finance Meets Flair in the Heart of Germany

Frankfurt, officially known as Frankfurt am Main, is a city of captivating contrasts. While renowned as one of the world's leading financial centers, it also pulsates with a vibrant cultural scene and a rich historical tapestry.

As Germany's fifth-largest city and the largest in the state of Hesse, Frankfurt enjoys a strategic location on the River Main, making it a vital transportation hub for Europe. But beyond its economic prowess, Frankfurt captivates visitors with its unique blend of old and new.

Medieval architecture stands in the shadow of sleek skyscrapers, a testament to the city's evolution from ancient trading post to modern metropolis. Frankfurt is home to major institutions like the European Central Bank, Deutsche Bundesbank, and the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, yet it also boasts world-class museums, charming neighborhoods, and a calendar brimming with festivals and events.

Bookworms flock to the annual Frankfurt Book Fair, the world's largest publishing event, while music enthusiasts revel in the sounds of the Music Fair, a leading trade fair for musical instruments. And for car aficionados, Frankfurt hosts the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA), one of the world's most prestigious motor shows. Whether you're drawn to its financial prowess, its cultural offerings, or its unique blend of old and new, Frankfurt is a city that promises to captivate and surprise.

Touching Down in Frankfurt: Navigating the Airport and Beyond

My journey to Frankfurt began with a mix of anticipation and a touch of apprehension, fuelled by stories of lengthy airport delays. Thankfully, my flight proved to be relatively smooth, with only a minor 20-minute delay attributed to the heightened security measures in place due to the situation in Ukraine.

Upon arrival at Frankfurt International Airport—Germany's busiest and a major European hub—any lingering travel stress quickly dissipated. The airport, renowned for its efficiency, is seamlessly connected to the city center, making onward travel a breeze.

For those seeking a swift and convenient option, the S-Bahn train is a traveler's best friend. A short 13-kilometer journey, taking a mere 30-40 minutes, whisks you from the airport's dedicated long-distance train station, Frankfurt (Main) Flughafen Fernbahnhof, directly to the heart of the city.

Frankfurt Airport to City Center: Hop on the Free Train You Didn't Know Existed

One thing often omitted when providing information about getting into town is the connection between the terminal where the plane lands and the train going into the city. Landing in a new city can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to figuring out transportation. But Frankfurt Airport has a hidden gem that will make your journey into the city a breeze: the Flysky train.

The Mystery of the Missing Connection

One thing I found surprisingly absent from most travel guides was information about getting from the airport terminals to the city's train system. After some sleuthing (and questioning several airport employees), I discovered the secret: the Flysky.

The Secret's Out: Meet the Flysky Train

This free, automated train seamlessly connects the airport terminals to the regional train station, putting you within easy reach of central Frankfurt. From there, we took the Flysky train for a few stops. Public transport is the most convenient means of travel.
Here's what you need to know:
• Free Ride: The Flysky is completely free for arriving passengers.
• Find Your Terminal: We landed at Terminal 2 and needed to get to Terminal 1 for the Flysky. Double-check which terminal you need based on your arrival gate.
• Short and Sweet: The ride is only a few stops and deposits you directly at the regional train station.

From Regional Station to City Center

As you arrive at the brightly lit regional station, you'll feel a wave of relief – the city center is now within easy reach. Look for the S-Bahn trains (S9 or S8) clearly marked for "Hauptbahnhof," Frankfurt's main train station. Tickets are available from machines at the airport and cost €4.90.Forget expensive taxis – the S-Bahn is your ticket to exploring Frankfurt affordably and efficiently.So next time you land in Frankfurt, skip the stress and hop on the Flysky. You'll be sipping a cappuccino in the heart of the city before you know it!

Accommodation Gem: Novum Hotel Continental Frankfurt

 Our stay at the Novum Hotel Continental Frankfurt placed us right near the heart of the city, making exploring a breeze. While this three-star hotel boasts a simple elegance, it offered everything we needed for our sightseeing adventures.

One of the things we loved most was the peaceful atmosphere, a welcome retreat after busy days exploring. . It is clean and peaceful. Within walking distance of the hotel, there are several supermarkets and small neighbourhood restaurants where you can find everything you need. 

Speaking of convenience, the city center was an easy 15-20 minute stroll from our doorstep. This pleasant walk also took us right through the impressive skyscraper district – talk about a scenic route!

Stepping Back in Time: Exploring Frankfurt's Römerberg Market

Our four days in Frankfurt wouldn't have been complete without a trip to the enchanting Römerberg Market, the beating heart of the city's Altstadt (Old Town). This historic square transported us back in time with its charming cobblestone streets and beautifully preserved medieval architecture.

Despite suffering significant damage during World War II, the buildings surrounding Römerberg have been painstakingly restored to their former glory. We were particularly captivated by:

• Archäologische Garten: This fascinating archaeological garden offers a glimpse into Frankfurt's Roman roots with its excavated settlements.
• Alte Nikolaikirche: Dating back to the 12th century, this charming church stands as a testament to the city's rich history.
• Saalhof: Once a medieval castle, the modernized Saalhof now houses a museum and cultural center.
• Rententurm (Wharfinger's Tower): This imposing fortified tower, part of the original Saalhof complex, stands guard over the square.

Throughout the centuries, Römerberg has served as the stage for imperial coronations, bustling trade fairs, and magical Christmas markets. Today, it remains a vibrant hub for both locals and tourists, offering a captivating blend of history, culture, and charm.
And of course, no visit to Römerberg would be complete without admiring the iconic Fountain of Justice, crowned with Philipp Uffenbach's striking statue of Lady Justice.

Frankfurt Cathedral (Frankfurter Dom): An Imperial Icon, Not a Bishop's Seat

Dominating the Frankfurt skyline with its majestic 95-meter tower, Frankfurt Cathedral (Frankfurter Dom), officially known as the Imperial Cathedral of St. Bartholomew, is a sight to behold. This Roman Catholic church, built in the Gothic style, stands proudly in the heart of Frankfurt am Main.

While its English name might suggest otherwise, Frankfurt Cathedral was never actually the seat of a bishop. It earned the impressive title of "Kaiserdom" (Imperial Cathedral) – or simply "Dom" – due to its historical significance as the coronation church of the Holy Roman Empire. Imagine the grandeur and ceremony these very walls witnessed!

Even today, Frankfurt Cathedral remains the largest religious building in the city. Its architectural beauty and historical weight make it a must-see for any visitor.

Love Locks and River Main Views: Strolling Frankfurt's Iron Bridge

Connecting the charming Altstadt (Old Town) with the vibrant Sachsenhausen district, Frankfurt's Iron Bridge offers more than just a way to cross the River Main – it's an experience in itself. Known affectionately as the "Love Lock Bridge," it's adorned with thousands upon thousands of padlocks, each one symbolizing a wish for eternal love. The sheer weight of these tokens of affection is impressive!

But the Iron Bridge isn't just for lovers. It's also the perfect starting point for a leisurely stroll along the Main River. Enjoy picturesque views, stop for a coffee or a meal at one of the many inviting terraces, or even take a relaxing boat ride for a unique perspective of the city.

Frankfurt's Sky-High Icons: Eurotower & Main Tower

No visit to Frankfurt is complete without a trip to the city's impressive skyscraper district, home to two iconic landmarks: the Eurotower and the Main Tower.

Eurotower: A Symbol of European Unity

Even if finance isn't your thing, you can't help but be drawn to the Eurotower, primarily for one very photogenic reason: the gigantic EURO sign gracing its facade. This 40-story, 148-meter skyscraper in the Innenstadt district served as the headquarters of the European Central Bank (ECB) until 2015, when it was replaced by a new purpose-built structure. Still, the Eurotower remains a powerful symbol of European unity – and a great photo op!

Main Tower: Reaching for the Stars

For breathtaking panoramic views, head straight to the Main Tower. At 200 meters high (240 meters including its antenna), this 56-floor skyscraper is the fourth tallest in Frankfurt and shares the title of fourth tallest in Germany with Tower 185.

The Main Tower boasts five underground floors and two public viewing platforms, offering unparalleled vistas of the city skyline and beyond. It's the only public observatory in Frankfurt, making it a must-visit for any visitor who wants to experience the city from a whole new perspective.

Zeil Street: From Germany's "Fifth Avenue" to a Modern Shopping Paradise

By the end of the 19th century, Zeil Street was already earning its reputation as a top shopping destination in Germany, a true "Fifth Avenue" of its time. Today, this vibrant artery continues to attract shopping enthusiasts with its diverse offerings and contagious energy.

The focal point of the Zeil experience is undoubtedly My Zeil. This futuristic building, an impressive mall in terms of design, houses a variety of stores, from luxury brands to affordable names. Regardless of budget, visitors are sure to find something to their liking, from supermarket products to cutting-edge items.

Palmengarten: A Tropical Oasis in the Heart of Frankfurt

No trip to Frankfurt is complete without a visit to Palmengarten, Germany's largest botanical garden. Spanning an impressive 22 hectares, this urban oasis offers a captivating journey through diverse plant life from around the globe.

Wander through meticulously designed landscapes, from free-air gardens to climate-controlled greenhouses bursting with exotic tropical and subtropical flora. If you're lucky enough to visit during peak blooming season, prepare to be dazzled by a symphony of colours and scents.

But Palmengarten is more than just a feast for the eyes. It's also a hub for recreation and relaxation. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along winding paths, pack a picnic to enjoy on the sprawling lawns, or simply soak up the tranquillity of this green sanctuary in the heart of the city.

Frankfurt's Must-See Museums: Angewandte Kunst & Städel

Even with limited time in Frankfurt, we knew we couldn't leave without experiencing some of the city's rich museum scene. While Frankfurt boasts a diverse array of museums, we chose to focus on two: Museum Angewandte Kunst and the Städel Museum.

Museum Angewandte Kunst: A Journey Through Design History

We were fortunate to meet a wonderful staff member at Museum Angewandte Kunst who gave us a fascinating introduction to the museum's collection. Home to over 60,000 objects, the museum showcases the evolution of European decorative arts from the 12th to the 21st century. From intricate crafts and design masterpieces to book art, graphics, and even Islamic and East Asian art, there's something to captivate every art and design enthusiast.

Städel Museum: A Masterpiece of German Art

No art lover's trip to Frankfurt is complete without a visit to the renowned Städel Museum. Housing Germany's most comprehensive collection of paintings, sculptures, photographs, and drawings, the museum is a true treasure trove. With an astounding 4,000 square meters of exhibition space and a library boasting 115,000 books, be prepared to dedicate a significant amount of time to fully appreciate the Städel's vast collection.

Frankfurt: A City of Contrasts, From Gleaming Towers to Hidden Corners 

Frankfurt is a city that defies easy categorization. It's a place of striking contrasts, where gleaming skyscrapers and picturesque neighbourhoods coexist with grittier, less-polished areas. 
One aspect of Frankfurt rarely mentioned in guidebooks is its Red Light District, encompassing two small streets. While curiosity might tempt you to take a peek during daylight hours, it's best to steer clear after dark. 
Despite this side of the city, Frankfurt has so much more to offer. A city break will only scratch the surface of its hidden gems and unexpected charms. There's a sense of discovery around every corner, waiting to be unravelled gradually. 

Will I return? Absolutely. Frankfurt has left me wanting more, with countless unexplored corners and experiences yet to be had. My advice? Don't let preconceived notions colour your judgment. Come to Frankfurt with an open mind and form your own opinion. You might be surprised by what you discover.
