Râșnov, Bran Castle & Zărnești Gorges: The Perfect Day Trip!

Râșnov and Piatra Craiului: An Unforgettable Adventure

If you're in Râșnov and looking for a relaxing day trip, the Piatra Craiului Mountains are an excellent option! You'll find several easy trails, perfect for a day spent in nature. Spectacular landscapes and fresh air – what more could you want? Being so close to Bran, we decided not to miss the opportunity and included a quick visit to Bran Castle in our plan.
The drive from Râșnov to Bran takes about 30 minutes, but my advice is to allow more time, especially if you're visiting during peak season. It's better to be prepared! From Bran Castle, it's about an hour's drive to Fântâna lui Botorog (Botorog's Fountain), where you can start the hiking trail. Keep in mind that traffic can affect travel time, so check road conditions beforehand.
Bran Castle: Schedule, Tickets, and Tips

Bran Castle, a symbol of Romania and a magnet for tourists from all over the world, is located at the entrance to the picturesque Rucăr-Bran passage, on the road connecting Brașov and Câmpulung. Situated less than 30 km from Brașov, on DN73 (heading west from Brașov through the Bartolomeu district), the castle is easily accessible, even for a day trip. If you're planning a longer adventure, or a quick visit from Bucharest, the distance is approximately 200 km.

Originally built as a border fortress, Bran Castle impresses with its medieval architecture and strategic position. Although it's not the fairytale castle of luxury and opulence, you'll discover a place full of history, legends, and mystery. Forget the stories about Dracula (or not!), and get ready to explore a place with a fascinating story. If you're passionate about history, medieval architecture, or simply curious to discover an iconic place, a visit to Bran Castle is an excellent choice.
The visiting hours of Bran Castle vary depending on the season, so it's important to check the updated information before you go. Below you'll find the updated schedule:

Regarding ticket options, you have two choices:
Fast-Track Tickets: These tickets give you access through a separate entrance lane and may include a guided tour, depending on the specific package.
Standard Tickets: The price of standard tickets varies depending on age. Since prices can change, I recommend checking the official Bran Castle website for the most up-to-date information. You can find the link here.
The Zărnești Gorges Trail: Useful Tips

After you've explored Bran Castle, we invite you to continue your adventure to the Zărnești Gorges, a spectacular place just a few kilometers away. Near the entrance to the Zărnești Gorges, you'll reach Fântâna lui Botorog (Botorog's Fountain) – an excellent landmark to start looking for a parking spot. In peak season, finding a spot can be a challenge, but not impossible! Many tourists choose to park here, as the trail to Cabana Curmătura (Curmătura Chalet) starts from Fântâna lui Botorog.

If you don't find a spot immediately, try to advance a little to the intersection where the trails begin. Attention! Once you reach the barrier, don't turn left towards the village of Măgura, but continue straight ahead. We preferred to leave the car near the intersection and enjoy a walk on the forest road, breathing the fresh air and admiring the landscape. The Zărnești Gorges (or Cheile Zărneștiului) are an impressive canyon, with steep cliffs that take your breath away. If you're lucky, you can even admire some chamois! Unfortunately, we didn't have this opportunity, but we hope to have better luck next time.
The trail through the Zărnești Gorges is easy and accessible, perfect for a relaxing walk in nature.

Here are some useful details:
• Marking: red cross
• Length: approx. 6 km (round trip)
• Duration: estimated 3 hours (round trip)
• Difficulty: very easy
• Elevation difference: approx. 150 m
• Season: all year round You'll find markings along the entire trail, but honestly, you don't need them – once you get here, just follow the road ahead. Due to the low difficulty of the trail, special equipment is not necessary, but we recommend comfortable sports shoes.
