There are buildings you walk past without ever suspecting how many stories they hold.
In Bucharest, at 21 Lascăr Catargiu Boulevard, stands one such building. With its unusual ship-like shape, a dome rising towards the sky and a history stretching back more than a century, it is home to the Admiral Vasile Urseanu Astronomical Observatory, the only astronomical observatory in Bucharest open to the public.
But its story does not begin with a telescope.
It begins with an admiral.
With a passion for the sea.
With a passion for the stars.

Vasile Urseanu was one of the important figures in the Romanian Navy. He was a ship commander, one of the founders of Romania's first National Maritime Navigation Company and a man deeply passionate about astronomy. For him, the sea and the sky were not two separate worlds.
In 1908, following the efforts of astronomer and science popularizer Victor Anestin, the Romanian Astronomical Society “Camille Flammarion” was founded. On January 27, 1908, Vasile Urseanu became its president.
One of the society's main goals was to establish a public astronomical observatory that would help introduce astronomy to a wider audience. Urseanu decided to contribute personally to making this vision a reality. Using his own financial resources, he began building an observatory in Bucharest.
And he did not choose an ordinary building.



Why Is the Observatory Shaped Like a Ship?
This is one of the most fascinating stories behind the building. Admiral Vasile Urseanu designed his home to resemble a yacht. The astronomical dome became, symbolically, the place from which he could navigate not across the sea, but among the stars.
The idea was closely connected to his two great passions: the navy and astronomy. The building was completed around 1910 and made available to members of the Romanian Astronomical Society. What had begun as a personal passion had now become a place dedicated to sharing and popularizing astronomy.
Today, the building's distinctive shape is one of the first things to catch visitors' attention. If you are visiting for the first time, take a few minutes before going inside to look at the building from the outside.
It is a place where the architecture itself already tells a story.
1910–1916: The First Observations
The observatory was originally conceived as a private astronomical observatory, but it was made available to the Romanian Astronomical Society. Its main instrument was a Zeiss refracting telescope, used to observe celestial objects such as the Moon, planets and stars.
Among the astronomers and science popularizers associated with the observatory's activity were Victor Anestin, Constantin Pîrvulescu and Nicolae Donici.
During this period, the observatory was much more than a building with a dome. It was a place where people could discover astronomy through direct observation.
At a time when public access to such instruments was extremely limited, the opportunity to look at the Moon or planets through an astronomical telescope was a truly remarkable experience.
The Zeiss Telescope – The Instrument That Started the Story
One of the observatory's most important features was its Zeiss refracting telescope. The main instrument had an aperture of approximately 150 mm and a focal length of around 2.7 metres, making it one of the significant astronomical instruments available in Romania at the beginning of the 20th century.
Astronomical observations were carried out through this telescope, and public demonstrations were also organized. It is important to understand that, at the time, an instrument like this was not simply a piece of technology.
It was a window into the Universe.
1926: Admiral Vasile Urseanu Dies
Vasile Urseanu died in 1926. Following his death, the observatory entered a difficult period. Its main instrument was dismantled, and astronomical activity could no longer continue in the same way as before.
But the building remained. And its story was far from over.
1933: The Building Becomes Property of the City
In 1933, the admiral's widow, Jeanne (Ioana) Urseanu, donated the building to the Bucharest City Hall. In the years that followed, the space also became associated with the activity of the Municipal Art Gallery, giving the building a new role.
During the war, the situation changed once again. Because of bombing and the need to protect valuable objects, the astronomical instruments were dismantled and stored in the building's basement.
In this way, the observatory survived a period during which Bucharest itself was undergoing dramatic changes.
1950: The Observatory Comes Back to Life
After the war, astronomer Nicolae Donici, together with academics Călin Popovici and George Demetrescu, contributed to the efforts to bring the observatory back into operation.
In April 1950, the reinstallation of the telescope was completed. The operation was also supported by workers from the Romanian Optical Industry. At the beginning of May 1950, the Observatory reopened to the public.
May 1, 1950, is identified in the documentation of the Museum of Bucharest as the official beginning of the observatory's public activity. This was a defining moment in the history of the place.
From that point onwards, the observatory was no longer simply the home of an admiral passionate about astronomy. It became an institution dedicated to the public.
1952: The First Astronomical Exhibition
Just a few years after reopening, the Observatory began developing its educational role. In 1952, its first astronomical exhibition was organized.
The exhibition included original photographs and drawings produced as a result of observations made at the Observatory, together with objects created through practical activities.
This marked the beginning of a tradition that continues today: astronomy is not presented only through a telescope, but also through images, explanations, instruments and exhibitions.
The 1960s: The Observatory Evolves
During the 1960s, the institution went through an important period of development. By then, the Observatory had become part of the Museum of Experimental Sciences and was equipped with photographic equipment and a photographic laboratory.
Several astronomical instruments were introduced, including:
• a Zeiss 80/1200 equatorial refracting telescope;
• an 80/500 alt-azimuth refracting telescope;
• a 120 mm Zeiss polar coelostat.
During the same period, other scientific activities were developed as well, including a meteorological station and a seismographic station. The Observatory thus became part of a broader environment dedicated to science education and the popularization of scientific knowledge.
1966: A 450 mm Telescope
One of the most important technical milestones of this period came in 1966. A 450 mm Newton-Cassegrain telescope was installed and was considered, at the time, the largest telescope of its type in Romania.
The instrument represented a major technological step forward compared with the Observatory's original equipment. Unfortunately, the deterioration of the building led to the telescope being dismantled around 1970.
This period clearly shows how much Romanian astronomy had evolved in only a few decades: from the Zeiss telescope installed by the admiral to much larger and more complex instruments.
1968: Astroclub Bucharest Is Founded
Another important part of the Observatory's story is connected to amateur astronomy. Around the Observatory, a community of astronomy enthusiasts developed, eventually becoming Astroclub Bucharest, founded in 1968.
The Astroclub became an important place for people who wanted to learn more about astronomy, carry out observations and take part in activities dedicated to exploring the sky. This tradition of amateur astronomy continues today.
1970–1989: A Challenging Period
After 1970, the Observatory's activity was coordinated by Ion Corvin Sângeorzan and, from 1982 onwards, by Dr Harald Alexandrescu. Both played an important role in popularizing astronomy and maintaining a connection between specialists and the general public.
The communist period, however, also brought ideological changes to the institution's activities. From the 1980s onwards, the astronomical exhibition was replaced in the context of a new educational approach, while science outreach activities also took on a materialist-scientific educational component.
Despite these changes, astronomical observations and public interest in the sky continued.
1990–1996: A New Identity
After 1990, the institution entered a new chapter. For a period of time, the building housed the Romanian Space Agency, and in 1996 the observatory was reopened under the name Municipal Astronomical Observatory.
Following the political changes in Romania, the institution was once again able to focus its activities on public astronomy, education and astronomical observations.
2008: A New Technological Step Forward
A significant moment in the history of the modern Observatory came in 2008. Thanks to a donation from Alpha Bank, the institution received a 30 cm MEADE LX200R telescope, as well as an instrument designed for solar observations.
This equipment made it possible to observe the Sun at a different wavelength and gave visitors the opportunity to see phenomena such as solar eruptions. It is a great example of how the Observatory has evolved without losing its identity. The building has remained the same. The sky is the same.
But the instruments we use to observe it have changed dramatically.
2009: “Journey Through the Universe”
In 2009, the presentation “Journey Through the Universe” was launched, offering visitors a virtual journey through the Cosmos. Thousands of people took part in this experience, which offered the public a different way to explore the Universe.
The Observatory was now beginning to combine the traditional experience of observing the sky through a telescope with modern presentation technologies.
2017: “Discovering the Universe Together”
On September 21, 2017, the permanent exhibition “Discovering the Universe Together” was inaugurated.
The exhibition is dedicated to topics including:
• the Solar System;
• planetary exploration;
• stars;
• galaxies;
• Earth's place in the Universe;
• space probes;
• the exploration of the Cosmos.
This is the part of the Observatory that can be explored regardless of weather conditions.
In other words, if it is raining outside, it does not mean your visit is ruined.
You can still discover the Universe from indoors.
2020: The Observatory's History Moves Outdoors
In 2020, an outdoor exhibition dedicated to the history of the Admiral Vasile Urseanu Astronomical Observatory was inaugurated.
The panels trace the institution's development from 1908 to 2020 and feature images from astronomical events observed from the building's terrace and dome. It is a wonderful idea for a place with such a rich history.
In fact, part of the Observatory's past can be discovered before you even enter the building.


When Is the Best Time to See the Moon?
If you are visiting specifically to observe the Moon, the period around the First Quarter is one of the most interesting. During this phase, sunlight creates shadows across the lunar surface, helping to highlight craters and other surface features.
The Full Moon can be spectacular for photography and for observation with the naked eye. However, its powerful illumination can make some features of the lunar landscape appear less contrasted.What About the Planets?
The planets visible in the evening change throughout the year. For this reason, if you are visiting specifically to observe a particular planet, it is recommended to check the current astronomical schedule beforehand.
In 2026, for example, evening visibility periods vary significantly from one planet to another. Do not assume you will see the same planet every month.
The Universe does not operate according to our weekend schedule.The Weather Can Completely Change the Experience
This is probably the most important thing to know before your visit. Astronomical observations can only take place when the sky is clear.
If there are clouds, fog, rain or other unfavourable weather conditions, the telescope may not be able to provide the viewing experience you came for.
For this reason, check the weather forecast and the latest astronomical information before setting out.

The Observatory Is More Than Just a Museum
Behind the visitor experience, there are also genuine astronomical activities. The Observatory carries out observations and research involving different categories of celestial objects, while its activity also includes astronomy outreach and education.
Over the years, an important connection has developed here between professional astronomers, amateur astronomers and the general public. This combination makes the Observatory much more than a collection of objects on display.

One of the lesser-known features of the Observatory is its astronomical library. The Observatory holds hundreds of book and magazine titles, including historical materials that have been scanned and made available for reading.
Among them is “Orion”, a magazine founded by Victor Anestin in 1907 and considered the first astronomy magazine in Romania.
For anyone interested in the history of Romanian astronomy, this part of the Observatory's activity is particularly fascinating.

The Observatory is located close to Piața Romană and can easily be included in a sightseeing route through central Bucharest.

The easiest option by public transport is the metro, getting off at Piața Romană Station.
You can also reach the area using several surface public transport routes.

Tuesday–Saturday: 2:00 PM–10:00 PM
Sunday–Monday: Closed
Last admission: 9:00 PM
Exhibition closes: 9:30 PM
Astronomical observations take place after dark and only when the sky is clear.
Access to the terrace is generally organized approximately every 30 minutes, although the waiting time may increase when the Observatory is busy.
