A breathtaking landscape

Located in the northwest of Prahova County, at the foot of the Baiului and Grohotiș Mountains (the westernmost massifs of the Curvature group within the Eastern Carpathian's), Valea Doftanei is an ideal destination for nature lovers. Clear rivers, spectacular lakes, dense forests, and fresh air – all come together in a natural tableau of rare beauty.

The commune of Valea Doftanei consists of the villages of Teșila and Trăisteni, and takes its name from the eponymous river that crosses it, the Doftana River. It springs from Predeluș Pass and flows gently for 30 km, forming the impressive Paltinu Reservoir in the southern part.

Paltinu Lake – An oasis of tranquility and adventure

With a length of 3 km and a breathtaking view, Paltinu Lake is the central point of the area. Here you can fish, relax on the shore, or explore the surroundings by boat. Its shores are perfect for camping, picnics, or simply enjoying the peace.

The Paltinu Dam, an imposing concrete arch structure, 108 meters high, not only supplies water to the cities of Câmpina and Ploiești, but also offers a spectacular setting for memorable photos. The total length of the dam's crest is 455 meters.

The dam is located on a geological substrate composed of sandstone, with intercalations of marl and clay shales, traversed by several faults and fissures that have been carefully studied to ensure the stability of the structure.

History and tradition

Valea Doftanei is not just about nature – it is also a place rich in history. The village of Teșila was first documented in 1538, and the Teșila estate was enfeoffed to the Mărgineni Monastery, while the village of Trăisteni was first documented in 1605 and the estate was enfeoffed to the Sinaia Monastery.

From 1950 to 1952, the commune of Trăisteni belonged to the Sinaia district, Prahova region. At the administrative reform of 1952, the commune was transferred to the Câmpina district of the Prahova region and then (after 1952) to the Ploiești region. In 1968, the communes of Teșila and Trăisteni were united under the name of Valea Doftanei, part of Prahova County, re-established by the administrative reform of that year.

In the interwar period, the commune was called Teșila and was an active center, with mills, sawmills, and an authentic rural life.

 Lesser-known but charming attractions

Without a clear plan, our steps led us to the Cross of Cornu – a place discovered by chance, whose name we learned later after a friendly chat with our friend Google.

If you want to discover less touristy but charming places, climb up to the Cross of Cornu. Located in a quiet area, with benches for resting and a spectacular panorama of the town of Breaza – where you can also find the Heroes' Cross of Breaza – this cross is a perfect place for contemplation and reconnection with nature.
